Old Fart

High Fire pieces have been fired to temperatures in excess of 2300 degrees F. They are food safe and dish washer safe as well as being water tight. Due to the high iron content of some clays, some pieces may become very hot if used in a microwave oven. For your safety please consider all of my pottery as unsafe for microwave use.

The turquoise glaze, as well as many others that I use, came about from an experimental search for a deep, dark green glaze. I have yet to attain the ultimate green glaze, but I hope you will enjoy the fruits of my search. When formulating a glaze from scratch it is always exciting when failure turns out so nice.

Pieces may be wheel thrown, hand built or a combination of the two. Sometimes I may embellish a piece with engobes, stains or washes as well as glazing. I also may leave a piece or a portion of a piece un-glazed to allow the properties of the clay to show. I enjoy texture, be it created with variations in the glazed surface or from physically texturing the clay itself.

High fired pieces are "dry-foot" fired in the kiln. This requires that the portion of the piece that touched the kiln shelf to not be glazed. If a piece is to be placed on an easily scratched surface, care must be taken so the "dry foot" does not mar the surface.
